Is there disagreement regarding covering the area between the navel and the knees during washing?

There is no known disagreement that the area between the navel and the knees must be covered, as this constitutes the 'awrah (intimate parts). Covering the 'awrah is commanded. The Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed Ali, 'Do not look at the thigh of a living person, nor a dead one.'

It is related that the gazer, among men, upon the private parts of men is like the gazer upon the private parts of women, and the one who exposes himself is cursed.
