Primary text

There is a difference of opinion regarding continuing supplication after the fourth Takbir. Some narrations from Ahmad suggest supplicating and then making Taslim (salutation). It is reported that some scholars said one should recite the verse: 'Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.' Others suggested saying, 'O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward, nor cause us to err after him.'

The disagreement concerns the recommendation (Istihbab) of these concluding supplications, but there is no disagreement that they are not obligatory. Standing briefly after the Takbir is legislated. Al-Jawzajani narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to make four Takbirs and then say, 'Whatever Allah wills' (Ma sha'a Allah), and then depart. Al-Jawzajani pondered if this pause was for the last ranks to complete their Takbir, fearing the Imam's Taslim might precede it, expressing caution against interpreting the Prophet's intention if it were otherwise.
