Primary text
Throwing three handfuls of earth upon a grave after burial is recommended (mustahabb). This practice is supported by the action of Imam Ahmad, who performed it after attending a funeral, citing the established practice of Ali, who performed it upon the grave of Ibn Mukfuf. The basis for this recommendation rests on authenticated narrations concerning the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) prayed over a funeral, then approached the head of the grave and threw three handfuls upon it, as narrated by Ibn Majah. Furthermore, there is a narration from Amer bin Rabiah stating that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) prayed over Uthman bin Mazun with four takbirs, then approached the grave and threw three handfuls while standing at the head of the grave, narrated by Al-Daraqutni. Ja'far bin Muhammad narrated from his father that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) threw three handfuls upon the deceased with both hands, narrated by Al-Shafi'i in his Musnad. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) also performed this act.
Supporting text
It is permissible to omit this act; Imam Ahmad stated that if it is performed, it is good, but if it is not performed, there is no harm (no blame).
