Which of two equally qualified guardians has priority in leading obligatory prayers?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Funerals
Primary text
When two guardians are equal in rank regarding prayer leadership, the one who is more proficient in reciting Allah's Book takes precedence in leading obligatory prayers. This is based on the general saying of the Prophet, peace be upon him: 'The people shall be led in prayer by the one among them who has memorized the most of Allah's Book.' The preference for greater Quranic knowledge overrides the virtue of seniority.

It is argued that the elder among them should be preferred because he is closer to the acceptance of supplications and possesses greater esteem before Allah. This view aligns with the apparent position of the Shafi'i school. Furthermore, seniority in age is considered contrary to the virtue of knowledge, which the Lawgiver prioritized in other prayers, even where seeking the acceptance of supplications and benefit for the congregants is intended.
