Book of Funerals
Primary text
Carrying the deceased between the two main posts of the bier is validated by the practice of several Companions, including 'Uthman, Sa'd ibn Malik, Ibn 'Umar, Abu Hurayrah, and Ibn al-Zubayr. This view is supported by Shafi'i, Ahmad, Abu Thawr, and Ibn al-Mundhir. Following the practice of the Companions in their actions and statements is superior and more preferable.
Supporting text
Al-Nukha'i, Al-Hasan, Abu Hanifa, and Ishaq disliked carrying the bier between the two main posts. Malik and Al-Awza'i maintain that there is no specific limitation set for carrying the deceased; one may carry the body from wherever one wishes.
