Primary text
The mother is prohibited from making distinctions among her children in the same manner as the father. This ruling is established based on the Prophet's saying: 'Fear Allah and be just among your children.' Furthermore, since the mother is one of the parents, she is forbidden from favoring children just as the father is. Moreover, the envy and enmity that result from a father singling out one child also arise when a mother does so, necessitating that she shares the same ruling in this matter.
