Is adding phrases beyond the Prophet's Talbiyah in Hajj/Umrah recommended?
Chapter on Mentioning Ihram
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
Adding phrases beyond the Talbiyah of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is not recommended (*mustahabb*), although it is not disliked (*makruh*). This view is held by Al-Shafi'i and Ibn al-Mundhir. The evidence for the core Talbiyah is the statement of Jabir, who said the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) performed Ihram with the Tawhid: "Labbayka Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk, innal hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak." People performed Ihram with this declaration, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) adhered to his Talbiyah and repeated it without adding to it, indicating that while additions are permissible, they are not favored.

Ibn Umar used to recite the Prophet's Talbiyah and add: "Labbayka, labbayka, labbayka wa sa'dayk, wal-khayru bi-yadayk, war-raghba'u ilayk wal-'amal" (Reported by Muslim and Bukhari). Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) added: "Labbayka Dha an-Na'ma'i wal-Fadli, labbayka labbayka marhuban wa marghuban ilayk, labbayk." Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) is reported to have added: "Labbayka haqqan haqqan, ta'abbudan wa raqqan." Sa'd heard some of his nephews reciting, "Ya Dha al-Ma'arij," and he corrected them, saying: "He is indeed Dhu al-Ma'arij, but this is not how we used to perform Talbiyah during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)."
