Is al-Tahṣīb (stopping at al-Muḥaṣṣab/al-Abtah) recommended upon departing Mina?
Chapter on the Description of Hajj
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
It is recommended for one departing to stop at al-Muḥaṣṣab, which is al-Abtah, defined as the area between the two mountains until the graveyard. There, one should perform the Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha prayers, rest briefly, and then enter Mecca. Ibn Umar considered al-Tahṣīb a Sunnah, citing that he prayed these prayers there, following the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) closely. Those who recommend it follow the practice of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), as Ibn Umar reported that Ibn Umar prayed there and mentioned this was from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). It is confirmed that Ibn Umar stated the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman used to stop at al-Abtah. This practice is not obligatory, and there is no penalty for abandoning it.
Supporting text
Tawus used to stop in Sha'b al-Jawz. Sa'id ibn Jubayr initially practiced it but later abandoned it. Ibn Abbas and Aisha did not consider it a Sunnah. Ibn Abbas stated that al-Tahṣīb is insignificant, merely a stopping place where the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) paused. Aisha stated that stopping at al-Abtah is not a Sunnah, but the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stopped there to facilitate his departure from Mecca.
