The area between the two lar{a{t}ayn (rocky lava fields) of Medina is sacred. This is established by the report of Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'What is between its two lar{a{t}ayn is sacred.' Abu Hurairah would further state that if he saw gazelles grazing in Medina, he would not startle them. Imam Ahmad held that the area between the two lar{a{t}ayn is sacred, a measure of one Burayd by one Burayd, as explained by Malik ibn Anas. Furthermore, Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, designated a sanctuary (himar{a}) spanning twelve miles around Medina. The basis for these rulings is the authenticated Hadith agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim, and the narration found in Muslim.
