Is a blood sacrifice (dam) obligatory upon a pilgrim performing Qiran?
Chapter on the Description of Hajj
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
A blood sacrifice is obligatory upon the pilgrim performing Qiran. There is no known difference of opinion on this matter except what is narrated from Dawud, who stated no sacrifice is due. This obligation is supported by the verse: {So whoever performs Umrah followed by Hajj [in the same year], then whatever offering is easy for him} [Quran 2:196]. The Qarin (one performing Qiran) is considered one who performs Umrah followed by Hajj, evidenced by Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) performing Ihram for both Hajj and Umrah when he heard Uthman prohibiting Mut'ah (a form of temporary Qiran), to demonstrate it was not prohibited. Ibn Umar stated that Qiran is specifically for those from outside the Haram area, citing the verse: {That is for he who does not have his family residing near the Sacred Mosque} [Quran 2:196]. Furthermore, it is reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever combines his Hajj and Umrah, let him shed blood." Also, because the Qarin benefits from omitting one of the two journeys, a sacrifice is incumbent upon him, similar to the Mutamatti' (one performing Tamattu').
