Primary text

All of Arafah is a designated stopping place. The Prophet, peace be upon him, stated, 'I have stood here, and all of Arafah is a stopping place.' The defined boundary extends from the mountain overlooking 'Arnah to the opposite mountains toward the walls of Banu Amir. The valley of 'Arnah is not part of the stopping place, and standing within it is invalid.

Scholars, according to Ibn Abd al-Barr, are agreed that standing within 'Arnah does not fulfill the requirement. Malik narrated that one who stands there must offer a blood sacrifice (dam), although their Hajj remains valid.
