In branding camels and cattle, which side should be cut?
Chapter on Ransom (Fidyah) and Penalty for Hunting
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
The recommended side for branding (Ishaar) is the right side of the animal, a view held by Al-Shafi'i and Abu Thawr. This is established by the narration from Ibn Abbas that the Prophet, peace be upon him, prayed at Dhu al-Hulayfah, called for a sacrificial camel, and branded it on the right side of its hump, wiping the blood away with his hand. The preference for the right side is further supported by the general inclination of the Prophet to favor the right side in all his affairs. If one brings the Hady from the Miqat station, it is desirable to brand and necklace it from the Miqat based on the narration of Ibn Abbas.
Supporting text
Malik, Abu Yusuf, and a narration attributed to Ahmad advocate branding on the left side, citing the practice of Ibn Umar. However, the explicit action of the Prophet takes precedence over the statement and action of Ibn Umar, and it has been narrated that Ibn Umar also adhered to the majority opinion.
