Is a camel (Badanah) sufficient for the penalty of hunting (Jaza' Sayd) which mandates seven sheep?
Chapter on Ransom (Fidyah) and Penalty for Hunting
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
If seven sheep are mandatory for the penalty of hunting, a Badanah does not suffice, because seven sheep are superior in meat quality, and one cannot substitute the superior for the inferior.
Supporting text
If the obligation stems from the expiation of a restricted act during Ihram (Kaffarat Mahdhur), a Badanah suffices because the required blood sacrifice is the easiest form of Hady, which is either a sheep or seven sheep (equivalent to a Badanah). The Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to slaughter a cow on behalf of seven people during Tamattu' Hajj. Jabir reported that they would share a cow for sacrifice, and in another narration, the Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded them to share a camel or a cow, with seven men per sacrifice.
