Is compensation obligatory for killing the hoopoe (Hudhud) or the shrike (Sard)?
Chapter on Ransom (Fidyah) and Penalty for Hunting
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
The ruling on compensation for the hoopoe and the shrike is varied, depending on the differing narrations regarding the permissibility of eating them. For any animal whose permissibility of consumption is disputed, its compensation is likewise disputed. However, for animals firmly prohibited (from being killed), the sound position is that there is no compensation, as this contradicts analogy and lacks specific textual proof.
