What disposition is permitted for a non-obligatory (voluntary) Hady that perishes or becomes defective?
Chapter on Ransom (Fidyah) and Penalty for Hunting
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
If a voluntarily dedicated Hady perishes or develops a defect that prevents its acceptance, the person may slaughter it and then consume it, give it as a gift, or sell it, and use the proceeds to offer another Hady. This is because if he is permitted to eat or feed the wealthy from it, he is permitted to sell it as it belongs to his possession. This is based on the narration from Ibn Abbas concerning voluntary Hady: slaughter it, and then you may eat it, give it as a gift, or sell it.

A narrated view from Ahmad suggests that if the specific animal becomes defective, he must slaughter both it and another animal to fulfill the obligation remaining on his person. The designated animal does not revert to his ownership because its dedication established a right for the poor, necessitating its slaughter.
