When does expiation (fidya) become obligatory for the ambiguous hermaphrodite regarding covering and garments?
Chapter on What the Muhrim Must Avoid and What is Permissible for Him
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
Expiation becomes obligatory if the ambiguous hermaphrodite combines covering his face with a veil or face-covering, AND covers his head or wears sewn garments on his body. This is because in such a state, he cannot be free from being either a man or a woman, necessitating expiation for the ambiguity of state.
