One must stay overnight at Muzdalifah until the dawn breaks, then perform the Fajr prayer. The Sunnah is to hasten this prayer at its earliest time so that the time available for remembrance at Al-Mash'ar Al-Haram is maximized. Evidence for this is found in Jabir's hadith, stating the Prophet prayed Fajr 'when the dawn became clear,' and Ibn Mas'ud's narration where the Prophet prayed Fajr when dawn broke, despite differing opinions among the companions about whether dawn had truly broken, with Ibn Mas'ud confirming he saw the Prophet doing so (reported by Al-Bukhari).
