What garments are permissible for a woman in the state of Ihram to wear?
Chapter on What the Muhrim Must Avoid and What is Permissible for Him
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
The consensus among scholars whose views are recorded is that a woman in Ihram is prohibited from wearing what men are prohibited from wearing, with the exception of certain types of clothing. Scholars have agreed that a woman in Ihram is permitted to wear the qamis (shirt), dir' (garment), sirawilat (trousers), khimar (head covering), and khuff (leather socks). This allowance is based on the necessity for a woman to cover herself because she is a source of 'awrah (parts of the body that must be covered). Since uncovering her face would lead to exposure, wearing garments for concealment is permitted, similar to how a man is permitted to tie his izar (waist wrapper) to prevent it from falling and exposing his 'awrah, but tying the rida' (upper garment) is not permitted.

Ibn Umar narrated that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, prohibited women in their Ihram from wearing gloves, the niqab (face veil), and garments stained with wurs or saffron, commanding them instead to wear what they wished of colored garments, such as saffron-dyed, khazz fabric, jewelry, trousers, a shirt, or khuff, after avoiding the prohibited items. The term 'garment' here specifically refers to stitched items like the qamis, dir', sirawilat, khuff, and head coverings.
