What grains and dried fruits are permissible for the *Fidyah* (expiation)?
Chapter on Ransom (Fidyah) and Penalty for Hunting
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
Wheat (*burr*), barley (*sha'ir*), and raisins (*zabib*) are sufficient for the *Fidyah*. This is because any item that suffices for *Zakat al-Fitr* and the expiation of an oath (*kaffarat al-yamīn*) is valid here. Evidence for raisins is found in the Hadith of Ka'b ibn 'Ujrah, where the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) instructed him to either fast three days, feed six poor persons a *farq* of raisins, or sacrifice a sheep. This narration is recorded by Abu Dawud.
