Primary text

It is forbidden for a woman in Ihram to wear gloves, which are coverings made of cloth for the hands, meant to shield them from heat, similar to what is made for cold. This is the position of Ibn Umar, Ata, Tawus, Mujahid, al-Nakhai, Malik, and Ishaq. The evidence supporting the prohibition is the Hadith reported by Ibn Umar from the Prophet (peace be upon him) stating: "The woman in Ihram shall not wear a face veil (niqab), nor shall she wear gloves," narrated by Al-Bukhari. Another narration states the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade women in their Ihram from wearing gloves and anklets. Furthermore, just as the man, whose head must be uncovered, is prohibited from wearing stitched garments on the rest of his body due to the ruling affecting his Ihram, similarly, the woman, who must uncover her face, should have the ruling of Ihram affect other parts, namely the hands.

Supporting text

A dissenting view holds that wearing gloves is permissible, supported by the practice of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas dressing his daughters in them while they were in Ihram. Ali, Aisha, and Ata permitted it. This is also the view of Al-Thawri and Abu Hanifa. Al-Shafi holds a view encompassing both opinions. Their evidence is the report that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The Ihram of a woman is in her face," arguing that the hand is a limb that may be covered without stitching, thus it may be covered with stitching, similar to the feet.
