Primary text

If cupping requires cutting hair, it is permissible to cut it without expiation, according to the view of Malik, Al-Shafi'i, Abu Hanifa, Abu Thawr, and Ibn al-Mundhir. This is necessary to facilitate treatment, similar to shaving hair to remove lice. However, other reports suggest that expiation is obligatory if hair is cut during cupping, based on Quran 2:196 and the analogy that cutting hair to remove harm necessitates expiation, just as cutting hair for lice requires it.

Supporting text

The view of Abu Hanifa's two companions is that the pilgrim should give charity (*sadaqah*) instead of expiation. If hair or skin containing hair is removed as a consequence of amputating a limb for which no expiation is due, then no expiation is due for the hair, as it is incidental.
