Primary text

Covering the face of a man in Ihram is permissible. This view is narrated from Uthman ibn Affan, Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, Zayd ibn Thabit, Ibn al-Zubayr, Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, Jabir, al-Qasim, Tawus, al-Thawri, and al-Shafi'i. The supporting evidence includes the statements of these Companions, as no opposition is known from them in their era, implying consensus. Furthermore, the Prophet, peace be upon him, stated, "The Ihram of the man is in his head, and the Ihram of the woman is in her face." The alleged narration prohibiting covering the face in the famous hadith concerning the man who fell from his mount has conflicting reports regarding the prohibition of covering the face, with some reliable reports only mentioning the head.

Supporting text

The opinion that covering the face is impermissible is the madhhab of Abu Hanifa and Malik. This is based on the narration from Ibn Abbas concerning a man who died during Ihram, where the Prophet (PBUH) commanded not to cover his face or head because he would be resurrected reciting the Talbiyah. They also argue by analogy that since veiling the face is forbidden for a woman in Ihram, it is forbidden for a man, similar to perfume.
