Primary text

It is permissible for a man who is ill, imprisoned, or has another valid excuse to appoint a deputy to perform the ritual stoning (Ramy) on his behalf. Imam Ahmad stated that if the deputy performs the Ramy, it is preferable that the person who appointed him is present at the time the stoning is performed, if he is capable. However, if he is too weak to be present, the deputy may perform the Ramy while the principal remains in his resting place.

It is recommended that the pebbles be placed in the hand of the deputy to ensure he is the one actively performing the act of throwing. Furthermore, if the principal loses consciousness after appointing the deputy, the deputyship remains valid, and the deputy continues to perform the Ramy for him, similar to the ruling if he became unconscious during the rest of the Hajj rites after appointing a deputy.
