It is permissible to coat the head with honey or gum to bind the hair, preventing dust from penetrating, avoiding dishevelment, and preventing creeping things. This action is known as *talbid* (compacting). Evidence for this is found in the Hadith of Ibn Umar, who stated: "I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) performing Ihram with his head compacted." This is reported by Al-Bukhari. Furthermore, Hafsa reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said regarding his Umrah: "I have compacted my head and garlanded my sacrificial animal, so I will not exit Ihram until the sacrifice is slaughtered." This is agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.
