Primary text

It is disliked (*makruh*) to sacrifice an animal whose ear is split, has something cut from it, or has a defect that does not prevent its validity (isqā'). This is based on the statement attributed to Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, who commanded to examine carefully the eye and the ear. Specific forbidden defects include *muqabalah* (having the tip of the ear cut), *mudābarah* (having the back part of the ear cut), *kharqā'* (having the ear pierced), and *sharqā'* (having the ear split for branding). These prohibitions are attested to by Zuhair quoting Abu Ishaq. Abu Dawud and An-Nasa'i narrated the traditions detailing these terms.

Supporting text

Despite the dislike concerning these specific ear defects, the sacrifice is valid (جزئ) using such an animal. There is no known disagreement regarding the validity (ijzā') of the sacrifice in these cases.
