There are two scholarly interpretations regarding the permissibility of paying the monetary value as a substitute for the prescribed penalty. One view holds that it is not permissible, which is the apparent position of Ahmad in one narration, based on the established options being food or fasting, and the prohibition against imposing an unmentioned penalty.
