Is it permissible to wear clothing previously scented before entering the state of Ihram?
Chapter on Mentioning Ihram
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
If one scents their garment, they may continue to wear it while in the state of Ihram, provided they do not remove it. If the garment is removed, it becomes unlawful to wear it again; doing so necessitates expiation (fidya). This is because Ihram prohibits the initiation of applying perfume, but not the continuation of wearing already scented items. If the perfume is moved from one part of the body to another, expiation is required due to applying perfume while in Ihram. Similarly, intentionally touching the scented area or moving the scent and then reapplying it necessitates expiation. However, if the scent flows from its original place to another due to sweat or melting from the sun, no expiation is due, as this is not an act of the person, treating it as if it were done in forgetfulness. Aisha reported that they used to apply scented musk during Ihram, and if it ran down their faces from sweat, the Prophet (peace be upon him) saw it and did not forbid it. This is reported by Abu Dawud.
