Primary text

It is recommended that a person performs Hajj on behalf of their parents if they are deceased or incapable. This is evidenced by the Prophet, peace be upon him, commanding Abu Razeen, "Perform Hajj for your father, and perform Umrah." Furthermore, a woman asked the Prophet about her father who died without performing Hajj, and he instructed her, "Perform Hajj on behalf of your father." In the case of voluntary or obligatory Hajj for both parents, it is recommended to start with the mother because kindness to her is prioritized. This priority is established by Abu Hurairah's narration where the Prophet stated that the person most deserving of good companionship is the mother, then the mother, then the mother, and then the father. However, if the Hajj was obligatory upon the father but not the mother, the father's Hajj takes precedence because obligation precedes voluntary acts.

Supporting text

If the Hajj is obligatory upon the father but not the mother, the father's Hajj must be performed first because obligation is prioritized over the voluntary act recommended for the mother.
