Is it recommended to raise the hands upon seeing the Ka'bah for the first time?
Chapter on Mentioning Hajj and Entering Makkah
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
Raising the hands upon seeing the Ka'bah is recommended. This view is held by Al-Thawri, Ibn al-Mubarak, Al-Shafi'i, and Ishaq, based on narrations from Ibn Umar and Ibn Abbas. Evidence supporting this is a narration from Abu Bakr bin Al-Mundhir stating that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said hands should not be raised except in seven instances, one of which is facing the House (Al-Bayt, the Ka'bah). Furthermore, supplication is recommended upon seeing the Ka'bah, and raising the hands is commanded during supplication.
Supporting text
Malik did not consider raising the hands recommended. This is based on the report where Jabir bin Abdullah, when asked about raising hands upon seeing the House, stated he thought only Jews did such an act, noting that during the Hajj with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, they did not do it. However, the evidence for raising hands is the Prophet's saying, whereas Jabir's report is based on his perception and action, and it conflicts with the reports from Ibn Umar and Ibn Abbas.
