It is not recommended to touch or kiss the wall of the grave of the Prophet, peace be upon him. Ahmad stated that he does not recognize this practice. Those learned people among the people of Medina, as observed by Al-Athram, do not touch the grave of the Prophet; they stand at a distance and offer their salutations. Abu Abdullah (Ahmad) stated that this was the practice of Ibn Umar.
