Primary text

It is recommended for a woman to apply henna upon entering the state of Ihram. This is supported by the report from Ibn Umar, stating that it is from the Sunnah for a woman to rub her hands with henna. Furthermore, henna is considered an adornment for women, making its application recommended upon entering Ihram, similar to perfume. The underlying principle is permissibility, and there is no explicit text, consensus, or similar prohibition that prevents its use. Evidence includes the report from 'Ikrimah stating that 'Aishah and the wives of the Prophet, peace be upon him, used to apply henna while they were in the state of Ihram.

Supporting text

The application of henna is disliked by Malik and Muhammad ibn al-Hasan, who also required the woman to pay a Fidyah (expiation) if she applied it. Al-Qadi disliked it because it is an adornment, analogizing it to kohl made from antimony.
