What is the liability if a designated animal perishes due to the owner's destruction or negligence after designation?
Chapter on Ransom (Fidyah) and Penalty for Hunting
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
If the owner causes the designated animal to perish, or if it perishes due to his negligence (*tafrit*), he becomes liable for the replacement value equivalent to the specific designated animal. This is because the right of Allah became attached to the specific item, and by failing to safeguard it, he must guarantee its equivalent, just as if the specific animal had been designated from the outset.
