Linguistically, Hajj means intending or proceeding toward something. Al-Khalil defined it as frequently proceeding toward one whom one holds in high regard. This meaning is supported by poetry stating that people frequently visit someone revered, where 'hajjun' (they perform Hajj) signifies 'they intend.'
