Is mentioning the specific Hajj or Umrah intention in the Talbiyah recommended?
Chapter on Mentioning Ihram
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
It is recommended to mention what one has entered Ihram for within the Talbiyah. Ahmad permits stating the intention for Hajj alone, Umrah alone, or both (Hajj and Umrah). If both are stated, Umrah should be mentioned first, such as saying, 'Labbayka bi Umrah wa Hajj.' The evidence for this is the narration from Anas that he heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saying, 'Labbayka Umrah wa Hajj.' Furthermore, Jabir narrated that they arrived with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, while saying, 'Labbayka bil-Hajj,' and Ibn Umar narrated that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commenced with Umrah, then entered Hajj. These narrations are considered sound and numerous.

Abu al-Khattab holds that specifying the intention in the Talbiyah is not recommended. This view is also held by Ibn Umar and Shafi'i, based on the narration that Jabir stated the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not specify Hajj or Umrah in his Talbiyah. Ibn Umar also reprimanded a man who was saying, 'Labbayka bi Umrah,' telling him to know what was in his heart.
