What is the minimum number of pebbles required for the ritual stoning (Ramy)?
Chapter on the Description of Hajj
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
The minimum requirement for the ritual stoning is seven pebbles. This is established because the Prophet, peace be upon him, stoned with seven pebbles. If one omits one or two pebbles, it is permissible, but omitting more than two is not allowed. This view is held by Mujahid and Ishaq. Evidence for this stance is derived from the action of the Prophet (PBUH) stoning with seven pebbles.

Some opinions permit stoning with six pebbles if done forgetfully, in which case no penalty is due, though intentionally doing so requires giving charity. Ibn Umar stated he made no distinction between stoning with six or seven, and Ibn Abbas was unsure if the Prophet stoned with six or seven. Ahmad narrated that seven is a condition, a view attributed to the Shafi'i school and Ahl al-Ra'y, based on the Prophet's action. Abu Hayyah stated that whatever amount of pebbles a man throws is acceptable, which Abdullah ibn Amr confirmed, noting Abu Hayyah was a companion who participated in Badr.
