Primary text

For barley, wheat, and raisins, the minimum quantity permissible for the expiation is not less than three *Sā'* for each poor person, except for wheat.

Regarding wheat, there are two scholarly opinions. The first opinion states that a *Mudd* of wheat is sufficient for each poor person, equivalent to half a *Sā'* of other items, mirroring the ruling in the expiation of an oath. The second opinion mandates that no less than half a *Sā'* of wheat is acceptable, as the ruling derived for wheat is by implication or analogy (*qiyās*), and the derived case must resemble its origin and not contradict it. Malik and Al-Shafi'i hold this second view.
