Does the penalty for hunting multiply or overlap when multiple hunts occur?
Chapter on Ransom (Fidyah) and Penalty for Hunting
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
The penalty for hunting does not overlap; the specific penalty must be applied for every instance of hunting, whether the acts occurred separately or simultaneously. This ruling is established by the Divine decree: "So [there is] compensation, an equal like of what he killed from the livestock" (Quran 5:95). The equivalent of two hunted animals cannot be represented by the penalty for only one. Furthermore, if two animals were killed at once, both penalties would be due; therefore, if they are killed separately, the penalty is certainly due, as the state of separation does not lessen the obligation compared to the state of simultaneous action in other prohibited matters.

A view attributed to Ahmad holds that the penalties overlap, drawing an analogy (Qiyas) with other prohibited actions.
