What is permissible for a person in the state of Ihram to use for securing their garments?
Chapter on What the Muhrim Must Avoid and What is Permissible for Him
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
A person in the state of Ihram is prohibited from tying their upper garment (rida') or anything else, except for the lower garment (izar) and the money belt (hımlan). It is forbidden for the Ihram wearer to create a buttonhole (zir) or a loop (ruwa) for fastening purposes, nor may they use a thorn, needle, or thread to secure clothing, as this is considered akin to sewn (stitched) attire.

Ibn Umar prohibited a man from tying the edges of his garment behind him while in Ihram. Ibn Abbas was asked to button his outer cloak (ṭaylasan) while in Ihram because he intended to offer ransom (fidyah), indicating a potential exception or differing view related to extreme necessity, though generally, fastening is forbidden.
