What is permissible for a pilgrim in a state of 'Iḥrām' to eat when facing starvation and having access only to game meat ('Ṣayd') and carrion ('Maytah')?
Chapter on What the Muhrim Must Avoid and What is Permissible for Him
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
The carrion ('Maytah') is to be eaten. This view is held by Al-Ḥasan, Al-Thawrī, and Mālik. The reasoning is that if the game meat were slaughtered by the pilgrim, it would become carrion, thus equating it with forbidden carrion while simultaneously incurring a penalty (Fidyah) due to violating the sanctity of the 'Iḥrām'. Therefore, consuming the carrion is judged to be the lesser transgression. However, if the pilgrim finds no comfort in eating the carrion, they may eat the game meat, as if no other option existed.
