Can a person in the state of Ihram acquire game through purchase or gift?
Chapter on Ransom (Fidyah) and Penalty for Hunting
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
A person in the state of Ihram (sanctified for Hajj or Umrah) cannot acquire game initially through sale, gift, or similar means. This is evidenced by the report where Sa'b ibn Jaththama gifted a wild ass to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and the Prophet rejected it, stating, 'We only returned it to you because we are in a state of Ihram.' If a person in Ihram acquires game through these means and it perishes, they owe its penalty (jaza').
