Primary text

It is recommended that the pilgrim departs from Mina towards the standing place (Mawqif) in Arafah when the sun rises on the Day of Arafah, stopping at Namirah until the sun passes its zenith. The Imam should then deliver a sermon instructing the people on the rites, including the time and location of the standing, the departure from Arafah, spending the night in Muzdalifah, and taking pebbles for the stoning of the Jamarat, as shown in the narration of Jabir. Following the sermon, the Adhan should be called, and the Imam should descend to lead the Dhuhr and Asr prayers together (Jam' Taqdeem), with a separate Iqamah for each prayer, and no Sunnah prayer performed between them.

There is a difference of opinion regarding the Adhan call; Abu Thawr suggests the Adhan is called when the Imam sits down after ascending the pulpit, and upon the Mu'adhin finishing, the Imam stands to preach. Another view suggests the Adhan is called at the end of the Imam's sermon. The narration of Jabir implies the Adhan occurred after the Prophet (PBUH) finished his sermon, and in any case, it is acceptable. The statement that 'if Adhan is called, there is no harm' suggests a choice between calling Adhan for the first prayer or not calling it at all, which is the view of Ahmad. Malik mandates an Adhan for every prayer.
