The preferred time for the seven days of fasting is upon returning to one's family, based on the narration from Ibn Umar that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever does not find a sacrificial offering, then let him fast three days during the Hajj and seven when he returns to his family," which is agreed upon (Muttafaq 'alayh).
