Primary text

The preferred time for performing the three days of fasting is between assuming the Ihram for Hajj and the Day of Arafah, with the last of the three days being the Day of Arafah. This view is held by Tawus, and reported from Ata, Ash-Sha'bi, Mujahid, Al-Hasan, An-Nakha'i, Sa'id ibn Jubayr, 'Alqamah, 'Amr ibn Dinar, and the People of Opinion. Ibn Umar and Aisha narrated that it should be observed between assuming the Ihram and the Day of Arafah, which suggests the last day is Yawm at-Tarwiyah. This is the position of Ash-Shafi'i because fasting on the Day of Arafah while at Arafah is not recommended. The explicitly transmitted position from Ahmad aligns with the view that the last day is the Day of Arafah, as supported by the aforementioned scholars, due to the necessity associated with the pilgrim's need for the Day of Arafah fast in this context.

Supporting text

The view that the fast should end on the Day of Tarwiyah is also attributed to Ash-Shafi'i, based on the reasoning that fasting on the Day of Arafah while at Arafah is not recommended. Furthermore, this view is mentioned in Al-Qadi's "Al-Mubarrar."
