What is the prescribed manner for slaughtering camels (nahr)?
Chapter on the Description of Hajj
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
The Sunnah is to slaughter a camel while it is standing, with its left leg tied (ma'qoolah), striking it with a spear in the depression between the base of the neck and the chest. Malik, Al-Shafi'i, Ishaq, and Ibn Al-Mundhir preferred this method. The evidence for this is the report from Dinar ibn Jubayr who stated that he saw Ibn Umar instruct a man preparing to slaughter his camel to send it up tied and standing, stating it was the Sunnah of Muhammad (peace be upon him), which is agreed upon (Muttafaq 'alayh). Furthermore, Abu Dawud narrated with his chain that the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions used to slaughter the camel with its left side tied, standing on its remaining legs. The verse {So when their flanks have fallen down} (Quran 21:36) indicates that it is slaughtered standing. It is also narrated that the explanation of {then mention the name of Allah over them while they are standing in line} (Quran 22:36) means standing.
