What is the procedure if one cannot reach the Black Stone to touch or kiss it during Tawaf?
Chapter on Mentioning Hajj and Entering Makkah
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
If one is unable to touch the Black Stone, one should touch it with an object, such as a spear or staff, and then kiss that object, following the precedent of the Prophet (peace be upon him) who did this with a stick (mihjan). If physical touching, even indirectly, is impossible, one should point towards the Stone and declare Allahu Akbar (Takbir). This pointing and Takbir was done by the Prophet (peace be upon him) when performing Tawaf on his mount.
Supporting text
If unable to kiss the stone directly, some scholars maintain that the person should touch it and then kiss their own hand, a practice narrated from Ibn Umar, Jabir, Abu Hurayrah, and others. Malik's view is to place the hand on the mouth without kissing.
