What is the proper place of Ihram for the residents of Makkah when intending Umrah (minor pilgrimage)?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
For the residents of Makkah intending Umrah, their Miqat is the *Hill* (the area outside the Sacred Precincts). They may assume Ihram from any part of the Hill they wish. The basis for this is the Prophet's command to 'Umarah Aisha from At-Taneem,' which is the nearest point of the Hill to Makkah. Whoever is situated below the Miqat (closer to Makkah than the Miqat) must assume Ihram from where they start their journey until they reach the point corresponding to the people of Makkah's starting point for Hajj. For Umrah, this starting point is the Hill.

Ibn Sirin reported that the Prophet designated At-Taneem for the people of Makkah for Umrah. Ibn Abbas instructed them to make the separation for Umrah from Batn Muhassir if they assumed Ihram from the direction of Muzdalifah, indicating the necessity of linking the Ihram with both the *Hill* and the *Haram* (Sacred Precincts) for Umrah, which is not fully achieved if originating from within the Haram.
