What is the proper time for stoning the Jamarat on the Days of Tashreeq?
Chapter on the Description of Hajj
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
Stoning of the Jamarat on the Days of Tashreeq must occur after the zenith (Zawal). If the stoning is performed before Zawal, it must be repeated. This ruling is affirmed by Malik, al-Thawri, al-Shafi'i, Ishaq, and the Ahl al-Ra'y (School of Opinion). The evidence for this is that the Prophet, peace be upon him, only performed the stoning after Zawal, as stated by Aisha: "He stones the Jamra when the sun passes its zenith." Jabir also described the Prophet's Hajj, stating he saw the Messenger of Allah stone the Jamra after sunrise on the Day of Sacrifice, and subsequent stonings were after the sun passed its zenith. Furthermore, the Prophet commanded: "Take your rites of pilgrimage from me." Ibn Umar stated: "We used to wait until the sun passed its zenith, then we would stone." Any stoning performed after Zawal suffices.

It is reported that al-Hasan and 'Ata' permitted earlier stoning. However, Ishaq and the Ahl al-Ra'y permitted stoning on the Day of Departure (Yawm al-Nafar) before Zawal, but one must depart only after Zawal. Ahmad held a similar view, and 'Ikrimah also permitted earlier stoning. Taus stated that stoning and departure can both occur before Zawal.
