Primary text

There are two differing narrations on this matter. The first narration permits proxy, which is the opinion of Abu Hanifa, based on the reasoning that since the pilgrimage is not personally obligatory, proxy is permissible, similar to the case of someone with a debilitating illness (Ma'dub).

Supporting text

The second narration prohibits proxy for a voluntary Hajj in this circumstance. This is the position of the Shafi'i school, based on the reasoning that since the individual is capable of performing the Hajj themselves, proxy is not permitted, just as it is not permitted for the obligatory Hajj.
