Primary text

The established position from Ahmad is that the *Qārin* is only obligated to perform the acts required of the *Mufrid* (one performing Hajj alone), and one Tawaf and one Sa'y suffice for both the Hajj and the 'Umrah. This is the view of Ibn 'Umar, Jābir ibn 'Abd Allāh, 'Aṭā', Ṭāwūs, Mujāhid, Mālik, al-Shāfi'ī, Isḥāq, Abū Thawr, and Ibn al-Mundhir. The evidence for this is the Hadith reported from 'Ā'ishah, stating that those who combined Hajj and 'Umrah performed only one Tawaf for both. Furthermore, the Prophet confirmed to 'Ā'ishah when she performed Qiran, "Your Tawaf suffices for your Hajj and your 'Umrah." Similarly, Ibn 'Umar reported that the Prophet stated: "Whoever assumes *ihrām* for both Hajj and 'Umrah, one Tawaf and one Sa'y suffice for both of them." This is further supported by the report from Jābir that the Prophet performed only one Tawaf for his combined Hajj and 'Umrah.

Supporting text

A second narration from Ahmad suggests that two Tawafs and two Sa'ys are required. This view is attributed to al-Sha'bī, Jābir ibn Zayd, 'Abd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Aswad, al-Thawri, al-Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ, and the Companions of Ra'y. Proponents cite the verse {And complete the Hajj and 'Umrah for Allah} (Quran 2:196), interpreting completeness as performing all acts separately, and a weak Hadith stating: "Whoever combines Hajj and 'Umrah, two Tawafs are incumbent upon him."
