Chapter on the Description of Hajj
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
It must be performed by throwing seven pebbles while reciting the Takbir upon each stone, while being in the bottom of the valley (yastabtin al-wadi), facing the Qibla, and then departing immediately without stopping or standing at the site. This is the stated position of all scholars whose opinions are known.
Supporting text
Throwing from above the Jamrah is permissible, as 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, did so due to crowding. However, throwing from the bottom of the valley is superior, based on the report that 'Abdullah (Ibn Mas'ud) threw it from the bottom, affirming that the one upon whom Surah Al-Baqarah was revealed (the Prophet) threw it from there. Standing at the Jamrah is not Sunnah, as Ibn Umar and Ibn Abbas reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, departed after throwing Jamrat al-'Aqabah without stopping.
